Newtown Youth Centre
Coastal Marine Trust recognised Newtown Youth Centre as a worthy recipient of a £5000 contribution. Newtown Youth Centre, located within 5 miles of Southampton’s coastline, applied for funding to go towards their eco building project.
The eco building project will provide an educational centre for children who need help beyond the main frame of modern education. Furthermore, the state of the art building will promote renewable energy and recycling, two traits synonymous with Offshore Marine Management, the primary sponsors of Coastal Marine Trust.
Offshore Marine Management work in the offshore renewables industry, following the award of work on Scroby Sands Offshore Windfarm by Vestas and EON, they were keen to prescribe a percentage of the project to the area in which they are working.
The eco building’s co-ordinator, Carl Harding stated the visibility study, for which Coastal Marine Trust’s contribution will fund, is the first step in preparing a bid for the Lottery Commission and will be undertaken within the next six months, this is fantastic for the children and will help us move the project to the next level. He continued:
“The grant from Coastal Marine Trust is a huge step forward in getting this project off the drawing board and turning it into a reality, the new center in Jellicoe Road, was designed by children who currently use an old trailer as their clubhouse, and would be the only one of its type in the UK with a grass and flower roof to prevent heat escaping and keep carbon emissions low.”
Newtown Youth Center’s project in perfectly fitting with the Trust’s aim; to provide support to the coastal communities in which Offshore Marine Management work. OMM’s Managing Director, Rob Grimmond spoke of the contribution made to Newtown Youth Centre:
“It’s very rewarding to be able to help deserving organisations such as Newtown Youth Centre and we are hopeful this money will help set them on the path to building their fantastic eco center.”
Speaking of the motivation behind the trust’s establishment, Rob Grimmond said:
“We feel strongly that companies need to be socially responsible in what they do, not just what they say.”
Coastal Marine Trust is proud to have aided Newtown Youth Centre in reaching their goal and providing a better quality of life for youths in this coastal community.
